Events

As a national charity Back-Up New Zealand is always looking for new ways to get involved in the community, raise money and have a little bit of fun!  Listed below are the past events we have been involved with and recent events coming up..

Bike For Charity - Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge

This year the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge will be held on Saturday 29th November.  We are as keen as ever to have you join us to take part in this ever popular event.  For registration and sponsorship forms, or to just find out more information, please get in touch with the Back-Up office.

Last year we had 14 riders bike for charity, most Lee Taupo CC of them for the first time.  The object of gathering together cyclists both disabled and able bodied was to raise awareness of not only what we do, but also show others that with a bit of adaptive equipment such as hand cycles and racing wheelchairs and a determined attitude, anything can be achieved!   Lee Warn (see above), was brave enough to do the 160km's solo in a wheelchair built for racing.   And Neil Cudby (see below) completed the 40km relay riding a hand cycle.

The Wattyl Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge is New Zealand's lNeil Cudby handcyclingargest cycle event.  It covers a scenic course on 160km of sealed road around beautiful Lake Taupo.   There are options available for riders to compete in various distances, either as a team or individually.  To visit the Lake Taupo Challenge website for further details on the event go to www.cyclechallenge.com.

Wellington City Council Tourism Forum Abseil

Wellington City Council recently hosted an Accessible Wellington Forum on Tourism for disabled people and seniors on 11 April 2008.   Leading into this event, Back-Up New Zealand assisted 22 people of mixed abilities to abseil from two sites of the WCC building on Tuesday 8th April.  Due to the positive feedback that the WCC received we hope that it becomes an annual event.  See pics below.  To view more pics, just click on Wellington City Council Abseil pics.

Auckland to Cape Reinga Challenge

Lee Warn Bi-skiing

We are in the process of planning and organizing the inaugural Back-Up Challenge.  This year's event will involve the public joining Lee Warn (see pic on right), a paraplegic, who is pushing his way from Auckland to Cape Reinga supported by Ivanka and Kirstin (Manger and chairman of Back-Up New Zealand respectively) cycling and / or driving the support vehicle alongside.  At each town we hope to get involved in a variety of events to showcase our organization and to encourage donations.  Our aim is to raise awareness of disabilities while fundraising $50,0000 for Back-Up new Zealand along the way.

The event will take approximately 2 weeks to complete and will cover up to 60kms each day.  We hope with some publicity, many people from all walks of life will be keen to join us for a few km's to find out a bit more about our organization and a little about themselves.  If you are keen to support or join in, please get in contact with Deb on 0800 50 30 95.
