Frequently Asked Questions

Who can attend a Back-Up course?
The difference between Back-Up New Zealand and other outdoor adventure providers is that anyone can attend, no matter what their ability, disability, age or fitness level. Our courses can be created to cater for any group, or you can slip into an already set group. Talk to our course co-ordinator about upcoming courses that might be right for you.

How much does it cost?
Because each course is geared towards a certain group, the cost for each one will change. While they are expensive there are plenty of ways to get funding to come on a course. While we will assist in everyway possible, raising funds to attend a course is part of the challenge! We’ve prepared a guide to finding funds, so if you have any concerns please get in touch.

What activities will I do?
Again this could change from course to course, but your basic multi-activity course can include: gliding, blokarting, swimming, snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, scuba diving, climbing, abseiling, tramping, camping, orienteering and skiing in the winter.

What if I have personal care needs?
A huge majority of Back-Up clients have some sort of personal care needs. When organising your course the course co-ordinator will look at your needs and how Back-Up can best look after you. Some people prefer to bring their own carer, while others like to have use a Back-Up carer to push themselves that little bit more.

What will I get out of it?
It’s very true that you’ll get out of the course what you put into it! We will provide you with a supportive safe environment and highly qualified outdoor instructors, but the rest will be up to you.

What happens after the course?
If you’re attending Back-Up New Zealand as part of your personal rehababilitation plan we’ll provide you with a certain amount of follow-up to help you achieve the goals you’ve set for yourself. Back-Up New Zealands occupational therapist will also be there to help you take all that you’ve learnt on your course and apply it to your everyday life.
